Everyday Dental Care, Made Easier to Understand

Routine exams, cleanings, and prevention keep small problems from becoming big ones. When restorative care is needed, Dr. Gill favors the most conservative option that preserves your natural tooth.
Preventive Care

What Happens During a Routine Exam and Cleaning?

A hygienist removes plaque and tartar buildup, and Dr. Gill examines your teeth, gums, and bite, often supported by digital X-rays. This visit is also when an oral cancer screening and a periodontal evaluation typically happen.

How Often Do I Really Need a Dental Checkup?

Many patients do well with a cleaning and exam twice a year, but the right interval depends on your gum health and history. Dr. Gill will recommend a schedule based on what your exam shows.

What Are Dental Sealants, and Who Are They For?

Sealants are a thin protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth, where deep grooves can trap food and bacteria. They're a simple, conservative way to reduce the risk of cavities in those areas.

What's Involved in Treating Gum Disease (Scaling and Root Planing)?

When plaque and tartar build up below the gumline, a deeper cleaning called scaling and root planing may be recommended to smooth root surfaces and help gums reattach. Dr. Gill will explain whether this applies to you based on your periodontal evaluation.

Restorative Care

What If I Need a Filling, Crown, or Bridge?

Tooth-colored fillings repair minor decay while preserving healthy tooth structure. When more of the tooth is compromised, a crown rebuilds it entirely; a bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring to the neighboring teeth. Dr. Gill recommends the most conservative option that will hold up long-term.

Denture and Partial Denture Questions

Full and partial dentures replace some or all of your natural teeth to restore chewing function and appearance. Fit and comfort typically improve over an adjustment period, and Dr. Gill will see you through that process.

Root Canal Treatment: Saving a Natural Tooth

When decay or injury reaches the inner pulp of a tooth, root canal treatment removes the affected tissue so the tooth can be saved rather than extracted. It's typically followed by a crown to restore strength.

Custom Nightguards and Sportsguards

A custom-fitted nightguard can protect teeth from the effects of grinding or clenching, and a sportsguard protects against impact during athletic activity. Both are more comfortable and better fitting than over-the-counter versions.

Common Questions

It’s common to feel some sensitivity if it’s been a long time between visits, especially if gums are inflamed. Let the hygienist know—the pace can be adjusted, and a periodontal evaluation may be recommended first.
