Understanding Your Oral Health

A few minutes of good information can prevent years of dental problems. Here's what our Fresno patients ask about most.

Daily Oral Hygiene Basics

Brush Twice a Day
Two minutes, morning and night, with a soft-bristle brush and fluoride toothpaste.
Floss Daily
Cleans the 40% of tooth surfaces a toothbrush can't reach, between the teeth and at the gumline.
Don't Forget Your Tongue
A quick brush or scrape reduces bacteria and helps with fresh breath.
Replace Your Toothbrush
Every 3–4 months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed.

How Tooth Decay Progresses

Decay starts small—often just a soft spot in the enamel—and gets more serious the longer it goes untreated. Catching it early usually means a simple filling; waiting can mean a root canal or worse. This is why regular checkups matter even when nothing hurts yet.

Understanding Common Treatments

Plain-language explanations of the care we most often provide.

Fillings
A tooth-colored material that repairs a cavity after decay is removed, restoring the tooth's shape and function.
Crowns
A custom cap that covers a weakened or heavily damaged tooth, protecting it from further breakdown.
Root Canal Treatment
Removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth, relieving pain while saving the natural tooth.
Professional Whitening
A stronger, dentist-supervised bleaching process that lightens tooth color more predictably than store-bought kits.
Veneers & Bonding
Thin, tooth-colored coverings or sculpted resin that reshape, resize, or recolor teeth with minimal reduction.
Cleanings & Periodontal Maintenance
Removes plaque and tartar a toothbrush can't, and monitors gum health to catch disease early.

Diet & Your Teeth

How often you eat sugar or acidic food matters more than how much—each exposure triggers a new acid attack on your enamel for about 20–30 minutes.

Drinking water throughout the day helps rinse away sugars and supports saliva, your mouth's natural defense. Coffee, tea, and red wine are common causes of surface staining.

Gum Disease 101

Bleeding gums during brushing or flossing are the earliest warning sign of gingivitis—and it's reversible with better hygiene and a professional cleaning.

Left untreated, it can progress to periodontal disease, which affects the bone supporting your teeth. Regular cleanings are the best prevention.

Caring for Children's Teeth

Baby teeth matter—they hold space for adult teeth and support speech and chewing development. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first dental visit by age one or within six months of the first tooth.

Supervise brushing until your child can reliably spit out toothpaste (usually around age 6–7), and use only a rice-grain-sized smear of fluoride toothpaste before then.
