Pocket depths around each tooth are measured and recorded, along with gum recession, bleeding points, and bone levels visible on X-rays. That record is what determines whether a routine cleaning is appropriate or deeper treatment is indicated.
When plaque and tartar have collected below the gumline, scaling and root planing cleans those root surfaces so the gum tissue can reattach. It is often done in sections with the area numbed, and it is not the same procedure as a routine cleaning.
After deeper treatment, visits typically move to a shorter interval — often every three to four months — to keep pockets from re-deepening. This is a distinct appointment type from a standard adult cleaning, including for insurance purposes.
Where an uneven gumline or excess tissue affects appearance, conservative recontouring can reshape it. This is elective and is only considered once the underlying tissue is healthy — never as a substitute for treating active disease.
Bleeding when brushing or flossing, persistent bad breath, gums that look red or pulled back, sensitivity along the gumline, or a tooth that feels slightly loose all warrant an evaluation.
Periodontal inflammation is associated with several systemic conditions, and diabetes in particular has a two-way relationship with gum disease. We will ask about your medical history and medications because both change how we treat you.
Advanced bone loss, cases needing surgical grafting or regenerative procedures, and disease that does not respond to non-surgical treatment are referred to a specialist while we continue your general care.

An evaluation takes one visit and tells you exactly where you stand.
