Medi-Cal Dental, explained plainly

Medi-Cal Dental — the program many people still call Denti-Cal — covers real dental care for both children and adults. We accept it, and we treat Medi-Cal patients the same way we treat everyone else: same dentist, same chair, same explanation of what is going on in your mouth.
Accepting new Medi-Cal Dental patients. Status last confirmed 15 August 2026 — call to check today’s availability.

Care offered in English, Español, ਪੰਜਾਬੀ, हिन्दी, and اردو.

What Medi-Cal Dental covers

Coverage is broader than most people expect. Some treatments need prior approval from the state, which we handle for you — that is paperwork on our side, not a hurdle on yours.

Exams & X-rays
The visit that finds problems while they are still small.
Cleanings
Routine cleanings for children and adults.
Fillings
Tooth-coloured and silver fillings for decay.
Extractions
Including urgent removal of a tooth that cannot be saved.
Root canals
Covered on many teeth; some require prior approval.
Crowns
Covered in defined situations, subject to approval.
Full dentures
Complete upper and lower dentures, with relines.
Emergency care
Treatment for pain, infection, and swelling.
Children’s care
Sealants, fluoride, space maintainers, and preventive visits.

Coverage details are set by the State of California and can change. Before treatment we verify your benefits and tell you in writing what is covered and what is not — always before, never after.

What to bring to your first visit

1Your Medi-Cal card (Benefits Identification Card), or your plan letter if the card has gone missing.
2A photo ID, if you have one.
3A list of medications you take, including over-the-counter ones — a phone photo of the bottles is fine.
4Any dental X-rays from another office taken within the last year, if you can get them.
5For a child: the parent or legal guardian, who needs to be present to consent to treatment.

Missing something? Come anyway. We would rather see you and sort out paperwork than have you skip the appointment.

Children, teens & pregnancy

Under 21
Children and teens have the broadest coverage in the program: exams, cleanings, fluoride, sealants, fillings, and more. First visit by the first birthday. School-form requests are routine — just ask.
Pregnancy
Dental care during pregnancy is safe and recommended. Gum inflammation is common and treatable; leaving an infection alone carries more risk than treating it. Tell us you are pregnant when booking so we plan the visit around you.

Not sure whether you have dental coverage?

Two ways to find out. Call Medi-Cal Dental Member Services at 1-800-322-6384 and they will confirm it on the spot — or call us and we will check for you before you book. Either way it takes minutes, and it is free.

In pain and unsure about coverage?
Call (559) 271-8400. We keep same-day time for urgent problems. Coverage gets sorted afterwards — pain does not wait for paperwork.

Common questions

Is Medi-Cal Dental the same thing as Denti-Cal?
Yes. Denti-Cal was renamed Medi-Cal Dental — same program, current name. If your card or paperwork says Denti-Cal, it still applies. Some people also call it “the state dental plan.”
Do adults get dental coverage, or only children?
Both. Children and teens under 21 have broad dental coverage. Adults 21 and over also have dental benefits, including exams, X-rays, cleanings, fillings, extractions, root canals on many teeth, and full dentures. Specific coverage depends on the treatment and sometimes requires prior approval from the state.
How do I find out whether I actually have dental coverage?
Look at your Medi-Cal card or plan letter, or call Medi-Cal Dental Member Services at 1-800-322-6384 — they will confirm your eligibility and your plan while you are on the phone. You can also call our office and we will help you check before you book.
What if I need a dentist today and my coverage is unclear?
Call us anyway at (559) 271-8400. Coverage questions are solvable; pain is not something to wait out. We will sort out the paperwork side after you are seen.
Is there a cost to me?
For most people with Medi-Cal Dental there is no copay for covered dental services. Where a treatment is not covered by the program, we will tell you the cost in writing before anything is done — never after.
Are pregnant patients covered?
Yes, and dental care during pregnancy is safe and important. Pregnancy raises the risk of gum inflammation, and untreated infection is a greater risk than treatment. Tell us you are pregnant when you book so we can plan the visit appropriately.
Can I be seen if I have not been to a dentist in years?
Yes, and this is more common than you think. There is no lecture. A first visit is an exam, X-rays, and an honest plan that starts with whatever matters most — usually pain or infection — and works down the list at a pace that fits your life.

If you do not have Medi-Cal or insurance

You still have options. Our Premier Club membership is $32 a month and covers the preventive basics with discounts on treatment — it is a membership, not insurance, and it exists for exactly this situation. Financing is available for larger treatment, subject to approval.
