A hospital can manage airway problems, serious bleeding, and trauma. It usually cannot treat the tooth. Knowing which door to walk through saves hours when it matters.
These are situations where the risk is systemic, not dental.
These are treated faster, and usually definitively, at a dental office.
An emergency room can relieve pain and treat infection that threatens the rest of the body. What it generally does not do is treat the tooth itself, which means the underlying problem is still there when you leave. If the situation is not one of the red flags above, calling a dental office usually gets you to the actual fix sooner.
Call us and describe what is happening. If a hospital is the right place, we will tell you to go there.
