A Tooth That Is Sensitive to Cold

Brief sharp sensitivity that stops as soon as the cold is gone behaves differently from an ache that lingers. That distinction is the most useful thing you can notice before your visit.

What the pattern suggests

Associations, not diagnoses.

Sharp, stops immediately
Often exposed dentine, gum recession, wear, or a small area of decay.
Lingers for seconds after
More likely that the nerve is inflamed. Worth prompt assessment.
Only on one tooth, on biting too
Can be associated with a crack.
Several teeth, near the gum line
Often recession or abrasion from brushing technique.
New after a filling
Sometimes settles; if it persists or worsens, it needs checking.

What you can do meanwhile

A desensitising toothpaste used consistently helps many people with generalised sensitivity. Ease off hard-bristled brushing and highly acidic drinks. None of that fixes decay or a crack, so persistent or worsening sensitivity still needs an exam.

What we can explain here — and what needs an exam

What to do next

Note when it happens and how long it lasts — that history genuinely narrows the possibilities at your exam.
