Dental Care During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is not a reason to avoid the dentist. Gum changes are common in pregnancy, and untreated infection is a risk worth avoiding — timing and coordination are the practical questions.

What to know

Gum changes are common
Hormonal changes make gums more reactive to plaque; bleeding often increases.
Cleanings are generally appropriate
Keeping inflammation down is worthwhile.
Tell us you are pregnant
And how far along, so we can plan positioning and timing.
Urgent problems are treated
Infection and pain are not left untreated because of pregnancy.
Elective work can wait
Cosmetic treatment is usually deferred.
Coordination
Anything involving medication is discussed with your obstetrician.

Comfort during appointments

Later in pregnancy, lying flat can be uncomfortable. Shorter appointments, positioning support, and breaks help. Morning sickness may make certain times of day easier — tell us and we will schedule accordingly.

If you have specific medical guidance from your obstetrician, bring it. We would rather coordinate than assume.
