Dental X-Rays During Pregnancy

This is one of the most common questions we are asked, and it deserves a careful answer rather than a slogan in either direction.

How we approach it

Tell us first
Always. It changes the conversation before anything is taken.
Necessity over routine
Routine screening images are usually deferred; diagnostic images for a specific problem are considered on their merits.
Digital sensors
Require less exposure than film.
Shielding and collimation
Standard protective measures are used.
Urgent diagnosis
Where infection or severe pain needs diagnosing, imaging may be appropriate — untreated infection carries its own risks.
Your obstetrician
We are glad to coordinate if you or they want that.

The honest framing

Dental X-rays are directed at the head, use very low doses, and are taken with shielding. Professional guidance generally supports necessary dental imaging during pregnancy while avoiding unnecessary routine imaging. We follow that principle: not never, and not routinely.

If you would prefer to wait and the situation allows it, that is a legitimate choice and we will tell you what waiting means.
